Alumni Talk: 3 tips for new international VMU students

VDU

We are constantly asking our VMU alumni what advice they would give our prospective and current students about making the most of their time at VMU and living in Kaunas and Lithuania.

Meet VMU alumna Emma Lev from Bulgaria. She graduated in 2022 (Society, culture and communication programme). Emma is sharing her tips for prospective VMU students.

Tip 1

I think an important thing to understand is that the international community in Kaunas is still growing so often you have to be proactive in your search for places. I would say a good way to do it is to apply for a mentor in your first year and later become a mentor yourself. Alternatively, the East Asian studies culture club is full of wonderful Lithuanian students who are open-minded and willing to open their friend groups to new potential friends.

Tip 2

My second tip is to not take things personally, I will be honest, not everyone speaks English and there will be times when you will be ignored because you don't speak Lithuanian. Don't let it get to you, there is ALWAYS someone that will be able to help, you just have to figure out who that person is.

Tip 3

My third and last tip is to not be afraid to create your path. VMU is a liberal arts university, hence you can personalize your academic experience, but people forget that it doesn't have to stop on an academic level, you can try volunteering, and you can look for internships. Give things a try and grow your CVs with experiences while you are here.
