Ravinthiran Partheepan from India: “Aim higher and fly higher!”

VDU

Meet Ravinthiran Partheepan from India. He is a 2022 alumnus of VMU, Ravinthiran has graduated with a MA in Applied Informatics.

Hello everyone, I am sharing my experience here on how to get a full-time/part-time job during your studies / after completing your studies.

How to manage full-time work / part-time work and your university studies at the same time?

  1.  Spend one-hour for planning/prioritizing your activities before you start your work/studies.
  2. Use task management tools (Trello or Airtable) / write it down in your notebook. So that you will clear view of what to do for today.
  3. Take 10 minutes break for every 1 hour and stay hydrated.
  4. When you feel stressed or frustrated and couldn't handle your studies and work activities consciously then go for a short walk / hear some breezy music / do what you love but get back to your activities with solid focus. The optimal time for taking a break during a frustrating situation would be 10 minutes.
  5. Have your breakfast and lunch. Never ever skip these routines even if you are in a hurry for your work/in a hurry for completing your activities. (Important) Taking care of yourself is more important than your job.

Always remember achieving smaller goals day by day will make everything balanced and satisfactory. Don't rush to achieve bigger goals in a short period of time, it will only create a hectic situation during your progress.

How to find a full-time or part-time job?

  •  Prepare your Resume and Cover Letter

Your resume should contain your academic experience, work experience (For experienced people), and Project/Intern Experience for freshers. Please provide your project links, highlight your skills, highlight your achievements, provide your Linkedin (Mandatory) and website link (Optional), and most importantly describe yourself in some short words.

The important thing when it comes to finding a job, don't just add a resume to your application, a lot of job seekers skip the cover letter part on the application page. Your cover letter is the only place where you can describe your academic achievements, projects, and working experience briefly. So, please add your cover letter along with your resume then only your employer will get a detailed view of your application.

  •  Don't underestimate yourself when you receive a NO

Always remember when you apply for jobs you will receive a lot of rejections/NOs. Don't underestimate yourself when you receive a NO to your applications. Keep trying and learn what you need to improve in your CV/skills. Don't give up! Apply for a lot of jobs then only you will get one YES.

  •  Be active in networking

LinkedIn is an amazing tool for networking and finding jobs. Connect with a lot of experienced people from your industry and collaborate with them by sharing your project's experience. You will definitely get some recognition.

  • Analyze, and Update your skills & CV every week

Out of all these points, dedicate at least 2 hours every day to your career.

Remember these keywords when finding a job: dreams will only come true when you step forward, keep learning and taking responsibility, keep yourself updated always, maintain a good consistency rate on networking and learning, be confident about yourself, and keep trying again and again, dedicate some time to your goals, and always learn from your failures / from your previous job application rejection.

Some key points I would like to share with all of you:

  • Learn to say NO whenever it is necessary
  • Accept the flaws and learn from them
  • Every day is an opportunity to do something great and to do something great spend just 2 hours for it and that's totally enough

Take care of your health and I wish everyone good luck on your job hunt!

Aim higher and fly higher!
