Navigating the Lithuanian Job Market: Insights from Marketing and International Commerce Master’s Alumnus

VDU

On the occasion of VMU Alumni Day, our graduates participated in the discussion titled "Resilience and Optimism of VMU Alumni around the World", which took place on November 10.

Among them was Hüseyin Ograk from Turkey, an alumnus of the Marketing and International Commerce Master’s programme (2017 - 2019). He spoke on the topic "Entering the Lithuanian job market after graduation for foreign graduates". Currently, he works as the Head of PPC at Hostinger.

We invite you to check the main insights of his presentation in this summary.

Key Insights:

1. Importance of Social Networking:

Lithuania, though small in size, holds significant importance in the business world. Hüseyin emphasized the critical role of social networking in the Lithuanian professional landscape. Building connections and establishing a network is seen as pivotal, given the close-knit business community.

2. Cultural Awareness in the Workplace:

Drawing attention to cultural differences, Hüseyin urged foreign graduates to assess the working environment by asking themselves, "How does the working environment here compare to where I come from?" Understanding and adapting to cultural nuances are crucial for a successful integration into the Lithuanian workforce.

3. Language Skills and Job Opportunities:

Hüseyin highlighted that Lithuanian language skills are not a prerequisite for securing a job. Proficiency in English is often sufficient, given the international nature of many Lithuanian workplaces. But it's always a good idea, as a sign of respect for the country, to acquire basic language skills, such as A1 or A2 level in the Lithuanian language.

4. Targeting Industries and Companies:

For those seeking opportunities, Hüseyin recommended exploring international companies such as Vinted, Hostinger, Teltonika, NordVPN, Kilo Health, and Western Union, as well as the thriving IT sector and startup scene in Lithuania. Websites like startuplithuania.com provide valuable information for those interested in the startup ecosystem.

Tips for Job Seekers:

1. Use LinkedIn:

Hüseyin emphasized the effectiveness of using LinkedIn for job searches. Creating and maintaining a strong online presence can significantly enhance visibility in the job market.

2. Polish Your Online Identity:

In the digital age, a polished online identity is a must. Ensure that your professional profiles and digital presence reflect your skills and experiences accurately.

3. Professionalism Matters:

Maintaining professionalism in all aspects of the job-seeking process, from applications to interviews, is crucial for leaving a positive impression on potential employers.

4. Cultural Fit in Hiring Processes:

Hüseyin stressed the importance of being a cultural fit during the hiring process. Understanding and aligning with the company's values and work culture can significantly impact job prospects.

5. Have a Backup Plan:

Acknowledging the unpredictability of job searches, Hüseyin advised having contingency plans (Plan B, C, and beyond) to navigate any unexpected challenges.

For those considering a move to Lithuania for work, Hüseyin recommended starting with the website https://www.govilnius.lt/relocate-and-live/find-a-job, which provides valuable resources for job seekers and expatriates.

Thank you, Hüseyin Ograk for sharing your journey with current students and other foreign graduates.
